Frequently Asked Questions

SWITCHING AND SETUP

Can I keep my current phone number when I switch to Consumer Cellular?

Yes. In most cases, you can bring your current number with you. Just keep your existing service active while your number is being transferred. The transferred line will close with your previous carrier once the transfer is complete.

Can I use the phone I already own?

Often, yes. Your phone will need to be compatible with Consumer Cellular and unlocked, meaning it is not restricted to your current carrier. You can check your phone before switching using its IMEI—a unique identification number found in your phone’s settings.

What do I need to switch to Consumer Cellular, and how long will it take?

If you’re keeping your number, you’ll need your current carrier’s account number, the account holder’s name and billing address, and a transfer PIN or account password. Most number transfers are completed within a few hours, although some may take 24 hours or longer. Keep your current service active until the transfer is finished.

PLAN AND COSTS

Do the listed plan prices include taxes and fees?

No. The prices shown cover your monthly talk, text and data plan. Applicable taxes and fees are additional and vary by location. Charges for a phone, activation, international use or other optional services may also apply.

What happens if I go over my plan’s data limit?

You won’t receive a traditional per-gigabyte overage charge. With SmartFlex, Consumer Cellular can automatically move you to the next plan when you use more data than your current plan includes. You’ll pay the price of the new plan and can change your plan again if your needs change. On an unlimited plan, speeds may be reduced after you reach the plan’s high-speed data limit.

Can I change my plan if my needs change?

Yes. You can change your plan without a plan-change fee, so you aren’t locked into the same amount of data every month. You can make changes through My Account or contact Consumer Cellular for help choosing a different plan.

How does the 30-day risk-free guarantee work?

If you’re not completely satisfied, you can cancel within 30 days without paying monthly service or activation charges, provided you have used no more than 500MB of data. Taxes and charges for international use, roaming or other services may still apply. Any phone being returned must also meet the applicable return requirements.

COVERAGE AND FEATURES

Which network does Consumer Cellular use?

Consumer Cellular provides service through the networks of leading nationwide carriers, with coverage reaching 99% of the U.S. population. Because coverage can vary by location, check the coverage map for your home and the places you visit most often.

Can I use my phone as a mobile hotspot?

Yes, as long as your phone supports the mobile-hotspot feature. A hotspot lets other devices, such as a tablet or laptop, connect to the internet through your phone. The data they use counts toward your plan’s data allowance, and high-speed hotspot limits may vary by plan.

Can I send and receive international text messages?

Yes, although availability and charges depend on where the message is being sent. Eligible plans may include texts sent from the continental United States to Canada and Mexico, while messages to other countries may cost extra. If you use your phone while outside the United States, international roaming charges may apply.
